It seems like everywhere you go these days, you see ice cream shops and creameries that finally have their doors and windows open wide, ready to serve everyone’s favorite summertime treat.
And the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Center for Dairy Excellence are joining the fun, because they are welcoming creameries throughout Pennsylvania join the 2019 Pursue Your Scoops PA Ice Cream Trail.
That’s right, The Keystone State is bringing back is bringing back the popular Ice Cream Trail after its inaugural go-round in 2018.
For those who may not know, the Department of Agriculture started the trail last year with 12 sites ranging from Merrymead farm in the Philadelphia suburbs to Crystal Spring Farm in the Allentown area to Perrydell Farm Dairy in York. All sites used farm-to-table dairy products.
Consumers were encouraged to print out an official Ice Cream Trail passport to get stamped at each location they visited. Then they could mail the stamped passport in to the Department of Agriculture’s office in Harrisburg to win prizes based on how many creameries were visited.
Ryan Marshall of Ephrata, Pennsylvania and his family did just that last year as they hit all 12 stops on the trail.
“We really enjoy ice cream and we could eat it all the time. So, we decided to do the trail,” Ryan said. "It was fun. It was a nice change of pace and something different to bring the family along to. We’re happy we did it. … We’d do the whole trail again.”
The Marshalls and everyone else will have the chance to do just that this summer!
Not only can you take the challenge to complete the trail but you can also help your favorite creamery land a spot on the trail itself! The Center for Dairy Excellence is accepting applications through Friday, April 19 (Interested parties can enter by contacting the Center for Dairy Excellence at 717-346-0849 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
So you can get to your local creamery and encourage it to join now!
What is your favorite creamery and flavor you hope to see featured this year?
