NFL Hometown Grant Funds Delivery Van for School Meals

Carroll County Public Schools in Maryland, like many other school districts, has had a difficult year. Alternating between virtual and hybrid learning has made it difficult for the district’s nutrition department to get meals and milk to students.

So, when the NFL Hometown Grant was awarded to the district, they knew just what to do with the $10,000 — get a delivery vehicle for school meals! The NFL, through Fuel Up to Play 60, will provide $10,000 per NFL team ($320,000 total) in grant money to help school districts and/or individual schools facilitate sustainable physical activity and healthy eating improvements.

“The van will help us to deliver meals to more students and families, as well as move food from our larger kitchens to smaller distribution sites at schools,” said Karen Sarno, Supervisor of Food Services for Carroll County Public Schools. “We’re so thankful to the Baltimore Ravens and American Dairy Association North East’s Fuel Up to Play 60 for awarding us this grant.”

Carroll County Public Schools was chosen jointly by American Dairy Association North East and the Baltimore Ravens. They decorated the van with Fuel Up to Play 60 logos and healthy foods to help drive home what both school nutrition and Fuel Up to Play 60 are all about — eating healthy and getting active.

“Carroll County Public Schools have been big supporters of healthy meals that include dairy and of Fuel Up to Play 60,” said Hannah Louie, MPH, Youth Nutrition Specialist for American Dairy Association North East. “We were so proud to work with the Ravens to award them this grant on behalf of the NFL and our dairy farm families.”

“We understand the long-term importance and value of establishing healthy habits within our youth,” said Heather Darney, Vice President of Community Relations for the Baltimore Ravens. “That’s why we’re glad to work with American Dairy Association North East to identify school districts that are doing great things for the next generation.”
