Dave Graybill of Red Sunset Farm, Mifflintown, Pa., received ADA North East’s Dairying for Tomorrow environmental stewardship award at Ag Progress Days. The awards are designed to recognize dairy farmers who are committed to moving the dairy industry into the future.
Dedicated to protecting and preserving land and water resources, Dave has incorporated a nutrient management plan that includes composting manure and a manure lagoon; used field and water management practices like no-till, cover crops, contour farming, buffer strips, wildlife habitats and manages 16 colonies of honeybee pollinators.
The Dairying for Tomorrow winners for community outreach and animal care will be presented at the New York and Maryland state fairs.
More than 400 dairy farmers and industry representatives attended the dairy checkoff luncheon where they enjoyed Domino’s pizza and heard a checkoff update from ADA North East board member Doug Harbach of Loganton, Pa. He highlighted school programs, retail efforts and farmer training programs.
