Recently, 14 students from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) visited two New York dairies to learn about the farms’ sustainability and environmental practices.
Barbland Dairy in Fabius, N.Y., sits in the Upper Tioghnioga Watershed that eventually drains into the Chesapeake Bay. Partners Chip Engst, Luke Huysman and Bret Bossard milk 1,900 cows and farm 4,500 acres.
The second tour stop at the Dennis Family Farm, Pompey, N.Y., is situated in the Limestone Creek watershed that runs into Oneida Lake. Carl and Craig Dennis operate a 42-cow dairy and crop 400 acres.
Both farms have adopted multiple conservation best management practices to protect and improve water quality, including rotational grazing, manure management, wastewater treatment, and cover cropping, among others.
