This spring, patrons at Shoppers Food and Pharmacy gave donations that will lead to the sale of 11,535 gallons of milk to families that utilize food banks in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., area, as part of The Great American Milk Drive.
Additional milk drives kicked off this week at ShopRite in Union, New Jersey, and at Safeway in Washington, D.C. Maryland Dairy Princess Lynne Thomas attended the Safeway kickoff on Tuesday with former Washington Redskins player Brian Mitchell. Both milk drives run through the month of June.
ADA North East partners with the local retailers, National Dairy Council, Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP) and Feeding America to support The Great American Milk Drive, to help get milk into the hands of families who need and want it. Shoppers are encouraged to make a cash donation to the campaign at the checkout line.
Even though fresh milk is one of the most requested food items, food banks are challenged to meet the demand because of milk’s perishability. Themed “Feed a Childhood,” the 2019 campaign helps ensure kids in need receive the benefits of milk’s essential nutrients by providing access to it.
