‘Waste Not, Want Not’ – Nutrition Professionals Help Consumers Decrease Food Waste During Earth Month

Dairy farmers know the value of reusing and recycling food waste at home and on the farm, especially considering that about 40 percent of food goes uneaten in the U.S. each year.

“While the dairy community works hard on the back end to transform food waste into natural fertilizer and renewable energy, there are many steps you and your family can take to prevent food waste from the start,”  said dairy advocate and registered dietitian Deanna Segrave-Daly in an Earth Day blog written for ADA North East and shared with consumers on AmericanDairy.com and on her social media channels.

In an effort to help avoid food waste and reduce the carbon footprint in the kitchen, dairy farmers and ADA North East partnered with several other health professionals to show consumers how they can do their part.

ADA North East’s Sports Nutrition Advisory Panel combined tips and tricks to share with local families through the more than 15,000 high school coaches and athletic directors in our region.

The 16-member panel put together a fact sheet with suggestions related to meal planning, leftovers use, food storage, and food donations.

In addition, Sports Nutrition Advisory Panel member Stevie Lyn Smith conducted an Instagram takeover with ADA North East addressing food waste during the month of April that has garnered 7,600 impressions from viewers. Check out this recap of Smith’s posts
