As part of dairy farmers’ investment in youth, two Pittsburgh Public School District schools recently were awarded the Fuel Up to Play 60 “Hometown Grants” from the Pittsburgh Steelers. ADA North East worked with the Steelers to identify Phillips Elementary School and Barack Obama Academy to each receive the $5,000 grants because of their participation in Fuel Up to Play 60.
The Hometown Grants will be used by the schools to purchase new mobile meal carts with the goal of increasing participation in school meals, especially breakfast. These Grab & Go kiosks will assist the schools in serving bagged meals that feature yogurt, smoothies, parfaits and milk. In the colder months, hot chocolate milk will be served.
Fuel Up to Play 60 is a partnership between local dairy farmers and the National Football League that encourages students to eat nutritious meals, including dairy, and exercise for 60 minutes a day. Hometown Grants are awarded to schools to strengthen programs geared towards keeping students active and healthy.
