ADA North East registered dietitian and nutrition expert LaChell Miller spoke on behalf of dairy farmers to the Dietary Guidelines Scientific Advisory Committee today. She discussed how dairy is needed to fill nutritional gaps related to food insecurity, highlighting the dairy industry’s dedication to ensuring all Americans have access to nutrient-dense dairy foods.
Dairy checkoff began a partnership with Feeding America in 2012 that has since doubled the amount of dairy foods distributed through its food banks. More than 353 million pounds of dairy foods were made available to families in 2019 alone as a result of the partnership.
Miller explained ADA North East’s milk distribution efforts since the pandemic began — detailing that local families have had access to more than 700,000 gallons of milk to date with more to come — thanks in part to our partnerships with local food banks and community organizations.
The 2020 Dietary Guidelines will direct government nutrition polices related to the varieties of milk that can served in school meal programs, as well as set the standards for federal food and nutrition assistance programs.
