Cows spend 12 to 14 hours each day lying down, chewing their cud, and resting. That time isn’t wasted, it’s essential for their comfort, health and milk production. To support this, farmers focus on providing clean, comfortable bedding that helps cows make the most of those hours.

There are several bedding options available, and each farm chooses what works best for its herd and environment. While the materials may differ, the goal is the same: clean, dry, and comfortable resting spaces.

Here are some of the most common bedding options used on dairy farms in the Northe

Mattresses, Waterbeds, and Sawdust

On many farms, individual resting spaces for cows are fitted with specially made mattresses or waterbeds to provide a soft base. Farmers often add a layer of sawdust on top, which absorbs moisture and helps keep their stalls clean and dry.

This setup creates a well-cushioned, low-maintenance environment where cows can rest easily for long stretches of time.

Recycled Manure Bedding

Some farms take manure, a resource they already have, and recycle it into comfortable bedding. The manure is separated, dried and sanitized into fluffy material before being reused on top of mattresses or packed deep into stalls.

This choice helps farmers manage resources efficiently while giving cows a soft and supportive surface to rest on.

Sand Bedding

Other farms rely on sand, which makes the inside of the barn look more like a beach. Sand naturally shifts to support a cow’s body as she lies down. It also stays cool in warm weather, offering comfort during summer months.  Watching a cow nestle into a sand-bedded stall, it’s easy to see the appeal.

After use, sand can be collected, cleaned, and reused, making it a practical option for farmers that also keeps cows comfortable.

Bedded Pack or Compost

Some farmers maintain a large, open resting area called a bedded pack. Materials such as sawdust, straw, or other organic matter are layered and refreshed regularly. Over time, the pack breaks down naturally, like compost in a garden, generating warmth and cushioning.

This system provides cows with a soft, spacious resting area that’s especially useful during colder months.

Straw Bedding

For young calves, straw is often the bedding of choice because of its warmth and insulating qualities. Farmers spread the straw in thick layers, creating a warm, dry space that insulates against drafts and keeps calves comfortable.

Fresh straw is added often to keep pens clean and inviting, giving the youngest animals a healthy, well-cared-for start.

Comfortable Cows, Quality Milk

Whatever bedding option a farmer chooses, the goal remains the same: content cows that can rest as long as they need. Comfort plays a key role in cow health and milk production, and farmers make it a priority every day.
