Family Kitchen

The kitchen, the heart and soul of the home. The room where families come together, cook together and dine together. Our Family Kitchen series brings easy-to-make recipes that are perfect for families with kids at home. Between home-schooling and multi-tasking more than ever, "what can I have for a snack" has become a popular question amongst many households.

Family Kitchen will be bringing a new episode every Saturday at 11:00am from April 18th up until May 23rd. Michelle Barber, Kelly Springer and Abbey Andrew-Copenhaver will be sharing recipes that they frequently make at home, occasionally with their kids as sous-chefs.

EPISODE 3 | MAKING BUTTER WITH MICHELLE BARBER

Butter is a common ingredient that we add into so many of our recipes, but did you know that you can make butter yourself if you want? This week on Family Kitchen, Michelle and her two assistants teach us how to make butter right at home with a little bit of magic! Michelle even shows us how to form the butter into custom shapes with cookie cutters.

HOW TO MAKE BUTTER

BUTTER

MAKES 1/2 CUP

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Preparation

  1. Pour the heavy cream into a blender and blend on medium-high speed for 5-7 minutes.
  2. The cream will become whipped cream and will separate into buttercream and butter.
  3. Before removing it from the blender, pour out as much buttermilk as possible to separate it from the butter.
  4. Wash any remaining buttermilk so the butter stays fresh longer. Then put the butter in a bowl of ice-cold water.
  5. Squeeze and knead the butter to release the buttermilk.
  6. Continue changing the water until the water is clear. This takes about 5 changes of water.
  7. Pat your butter dry with a clean dish towel.
  8. Add 1/8 teaspoon of salt to the butter in a bowl.
  9. Put the butter on partchment paper and form into sticks or use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.
  10. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
