What Summer Meals Means to the Mayor

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney at the Philadelphia Summer Meals Kickoff event.

A warm, muggy day in Northeast Philadelphia didn’t stop local children from running around the jungle gyms and basketball courts of Lawncrest Recreation Center. And the conditions certainly couldn’t squash the kids’ excitement for a dip in the rec center’s pool.

But from the hardwood to the concrete to the blades of grass to the water, there was a special sense of excitement all afternoon.

That’s because, in addition to the American Dairy Association North East and a dairy farmer, local officials and dignitaries and news crews were on hand as Philly kicked off its 2019 Summer Meals program.

Among those on hand was Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, who, after interacting with the kids, shared his personal connection to the Summer Meals program, a free program that provides healthy breakfasts and lunches to children under 18 throughout the country.

“It’s so important for our kids to have access to meals like this when school is out,” Mayor Kenney said. “I can remember being in their shoes as a kid growing up in South Philadelphia and running around at the rec center all day during the summer and can remember receiving these types of meals that powered our day.

“When our kids our empowered with great resources like healthy meals, they can accomplish anything.”

American Dairy Association North East is proud to be a supporting partner of Summer Meals programs not just in Philadelphia, but in municipalities all across the region.

Along with bringing dairy farmers to speak at these types of events, ADA North East helps to ensure dairy products such as milk (white and chocolate), cheese and yogurt are integral parts of the free breakfasts and lunches the children receive.

“The Summer Meals program is an essential part of the city’s summer programs for kids,” Mayor Kenney said. We can’t do it without the assistance of partners like the American Dairy Association North East.”
