National Grilled Cheese Day: 11 Must-Haves in the North East

Grilled cheese is having its week and we were more than happy to hop on the bandwagon and taste test all the cheesy goodness. We did our best to find the top grilled cheese joints from New York State to Philadelphia to Maryland, and everywhere in-between.

Here’s the rundown of our top picks:

New York (Buffalo) – Melting Point
There’s more to the Nickel City than spicy Buffalo wings. Buffalo Melting Point brings heat of its own with a No. 64: Three Cheese Pickled Jalapeno grilled cheese sandwich, made with cheddar, monterey jack, ricotta, and house pickled jalapeños. Or try any of their nine other gourmet grilled cheese concoctions.

New York (Geneva) – Bubble Tea Café
Visitors to the gateway of the Finger Lakes can get classic comfort with a twist. The Inside Out Grilled Cheese at Bubble Tea Café is piled high with American, cheddar and provolone. The cheese is melted both inside and out for gooey, crunchy, golden perfection.

New York (Bay Shore)  AJ’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese
Comfort foods and guilty pleasures collide as AJ’s takes the classic grilled cheese and turns it on its head. From donut grilled cheese with bacon to Buffalo chicken mac and cheese melts, this Bay Shore, Long Island, grill has the most adventurous menu out of all of our picks.

New York (Manhattan)  Murray’s Cheese Bar
Murray’s Cheese Shop has been on Bleeker Street in Manhattan since 1940, serving up Manhattanites all the artisan cheeses their hearts’ desire. It was only natural, when in 2012, that they expanded their empire to a dine-in location aptly named, Murray’s Cheese Bar. We haven’t cracked the code yet as to which cheeses are part of the secret blend of cheeses in the Murray’s Melt, but we’ll make sure to keep coming back till we know for sure.

Good food = good mood!

New Jersey (Multiple Locations)  The Committed Pig
In a state known for its diners, The Committed Pig has secured its place in our weekend brunch rotation. Our go-to grilled cheese is the Fig & Brie. The creamy, salty brie pairs with the sweet crunch of fig spread for a sandwich worthy of dessert status and our top pick in the Garden State.

New Jersey (Collingswood)  The Pop Shop
So many options to choose from, with so many different fixin's. Many named after New Jersey locales or other places along the East Coast. Feeling adventurous? Maybe the Lobster Grilled Cheese (Lobster, brie cheese, and garlic aioli on sourdough bread) is up your alley. Really love cheese? The Richey (Mozzarella sticks, mozzarella cheese, and marinara sauce on focaccia) could be for you. Want to try a grilled cheese on a soft pretzel? Of course you do! And you can with the Park (American cheese grilled split Philadelphia soft pretzel). And those are only a couple of options! Even better... You can top things off after with ice cream or a milkshake!

Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh)  The Yard
If you find yourself in the Steel City and are craving gourmet grilled cheese, look no further than The Yard. With four locations in the area and another in PPG Paints Arena, the home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, you'll have ample opportunity to try one of the The Yard's 20 gourmet grilled cheese selections. Options range from sandwiches including chicken, beef, pork, seafood and veggie. There is even a Hall of Fame section that features specialties such as the Cheesy Capresey (fresh Buffalo mozzarella, provolone, roma tomatoes, infused white truffle oil, basil, balsamic reduction) and the Big Che-Bowski (cheddar, smoked gouda, fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, tomato).

Pennsylvania (Philadelphia)  Meltkraft
The Reading Terminal Market in the heart of downtown Philly is a hot spot for food of all types, from all cultures. And mixed in with the all the choices is a grilled cheese treasure. Meltkraft, which also has another location in Philly's trendy Rittenhouse Square area, has selections varying from unique (The Melter Skelter - Raclette-style cheese, pickled green tomatoes, jalapeno and BBQ potato chips) to classic. There is even a kid-sized option for the little cheese lovers! The locations are easily accessible and the grilled cheese is worth the trip!

Delaware (Newark)  Home Grown Cafe
Cheddar, jack, asiago, provolone, and feta pair with heavenly house-made bread, tomato, and basil oil to secure Delaware’s spot on our list.

Maryland (Rockville) – Full on Craft Eats & Drinks
Both Money Magazine and Delish have sung the praises of Full on Craft Eats & Drinks as one of their top grilled cheese haunts in the nation. We second their ranking and can’t get enough of the quintessential Maryland crabcake reimagined as a classic hot sandwich.

Virginia (Multiple Locations)  Cheesetique
The Grown Up grilled cheese from Cheesetique takes our childhood favorite sandwich and elevates it with Artisan Prairie Breeze Cheddar on grilled sourdough bread.

Thanks for coming along on our Grilled Cheese tour, we hope you discovered a spot or two that you can't wait to try!
