ADA North East has compiled resources for farmers who may be required to dispose of milk during the COVID-19 situation. Topics include recommendations for removal down floor drains, in manure digesters or storage, or by land application. Other considerations involve impact on nutrient management plans, odor, state laws or local ordinances.
Farmers are also reminded to report any disposed milk volumes to determine the impact of payment.
Below are several resources for farmers:
- Progressive Dairy: Dumping milk: Consider these recommendations
- Cornell: Processors and Farmers: These are unprecedented times and we should be aware of a range of possibilities, including changes in milk demand.
- Penn State: On-Farm Disposal of Bulk Waste Milk
- Hoard’s Dairyman: Milk disposal requires special care on land
