April Gokey from Stargo Dairy in Malone, N.Y., hosted an on-farm chat to show students their “adopted” calves as part of the Adopt a Cow program conducted by the Center for Dairy Excellence with support from ADA North East.

Through immersive, hands-on learning activities and free curriculum provided by Discover Dairy, the educational series that ADA North East and other dairy checkoff state and regional groups support, the students gain a deeper understanding of the dairy industry and where their food comes from.

Several of the lessons in the curriculum follow Common CORE standards in math, reading and science. After registering last fall, teachers received an introductory update with details about their calf. Classrooms then received bi-monthly updates, including suggestions on components of Discover Dairy curriculum that teachers were able to incorporate into virtual or in-person lesson plans.

Teachers will be able to sign up soon for the 2023-2024 school year at the Discover Dairy website.
