(June 3, 2024) ALBANY, NY – June is National Dairy Month, and Price Chopper/Market 32 is joining forces with American Dairy Association North East to support Fill a Glass with Hope®- a program that  provides fresh milk to local food banks.

The campaign, which runs through June 30, gives shoppers at Price Chopper/Market 32 stores across New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont an opportunity to ‘round up’ their change at checkout and help make milk available to children and families in their local communities.

While summer is often regarded as an exciting time for kids taking a break from school, it can be difficult for families suffering from food-insecurity. More than 22-million children nationwide miss out on milk and other nutritious foods during summer when they lose access to free or reduced-price meal programs at school.

“Price Chopper is committed to fighting food insecurity,” said Pam Cerrone, Price Chopper/Market32’s director of community relations. “And it’s important that we take a different tact during the summertime, because school is out and kids who are still playing, learning and growing may be missing out on the essential nutrients like protein that milk provides.”

While Americans are generous with canned and dry goods, fresh milk is difficult to donate because it is perishable. Milk is one of the most requested but least donated items at food banks. On average, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person, per year. Within the trusted channel of this campaign, 100 percent of all donations will remain local and help deliver milk and essential nutrition to families with children in need in our communities.

Fill a Glass with Hope® is a joint effort between the American Dairy Association North East, dairy farmers, agriculture partners, and business leaders to help provide fresh milk to families in need through a network of local food banks.

“Our family farm works hard every day to produce nutritious, wholesome milk,” said American Dairy Association North East board president and dairy farmer Audrey Donahoe of ATRASS Farm in Clayville, N.Y. “We take our responsibility, as all farmers do, to feed families, not only in our community but across the nation, very seriously.”

Since the partnership began in 2015, more than $260,000 has been raised, resulting in more than 60,000 gallons of fresh, highly-requested milk being donated to local food banks on behalf of Price Chopper/Market 32. The 60,000 gallons of milk has provided more than 960,000 servings of milk to those in need.
