Students will have the opportunity to visit a local dairy farm without ever leaving their home or school when American Dairy Association North East teams up with Stauffer Farms in St. Lawrence County to offer a free virtual farm tour.
Even with many students returning to in-person learning, off-site field trips are not expected to resume for schools in the near future. Through the use of video technology, children can experience a dairy farm tour and learn directly from dairy farmers about their commitment to care for their cows and the land, and how nutritious milk is produced.
Stauffer Farms is one of three Northeast dairy farms to host virtual farm tours this spring. The North Country farm will host 4th through 7th grade students on Thursday, May 13 at 12 p.m. Additional tours will be hosted by Talview Dairy in Lebanon, Pa., for Pre-K through 3rd grade on Tuesday, May 11 at 1 p.m. and by Mulligan Farm in Avon, N.Y., for 8th through 12th grade students on Wednesday, May 12 at 1 p.m. Tours are approximately 30 to 60 minutes long.
“While we are unable to welcome guests to our farm, we are thrilled to be able to offer our on-farm experience to students virtually,” said dairy farmer and tour host Adam Stauffer of Stauffer Farms. “During the tour, our guests will see how we care for our cows, and the environment, while contributing to our local communities.”
American Dairy Association North East began working with local dairy farmers to bring their farms to the classroom in 2018. Virtual farm tours have grown in popularity as an informative and engaging activity for students whether they are learning in school or at home.
